CareMentors

CareMentors is a peer mentoring service that exists within online social communities for people with type 2 diabetes. Through an ethnographic study, survey, and interviews, I discovered that the patients who often struggle with management are those who lack social support. To combat the lack of social support after diagnosis, I propose an intervention directly after diagnosis in the form of a peer mentoring service rooted within an online community for people with type 2 diabetes. I have designed and prototyped a large-scale health mentoring community service, called CareMentors. The service provides a template and structure for establishing a mentoring community for patients with type 2 diabetes, and could be adjusted for other chronic conditions. CareMentors includes the general service framework for establishing a mentoring community, along with the web site architecture, general interface and system touchpoints. My design solution aims to help patients with coping, feeling understood, in control, and in turn, more likely to make healthy choices and actively seek education to have better management of their illness. The prototype has been evaluated by 24 users through role-playing scenarios. The results of the evaluation suggest that mentoring relationships are most beneficial to users when they are initially diagnosed or feel they are losing control, and once in control, many users want to give back and mentor others.
