FDA Updates Calorie-Posting Requirements

Imagine going to McDonald's, ordering a McChicken–and seeing the nutrition guidelines. That's what the US Food and Drug Administration is about to do–all in accordance with a provision of Obama's 2010 health care law. It's a move aimed at curbing the obesity problem in the states. St. Louis' KSDK has more. "What the FDA is proposing is the posting of the calories next to each item on a restaurant's menu. The agency wants all chain restaurants to include fast food establishments as well as bakeries, coffee shops, and even vending machine owners to comply." In addition, the calorie-posting rules will be required only for chains with 20 or more locations, or establishments where more than 50% of total floor area is dedicated to selling food. The provision is set to take effect in 2012, but the FDA has stated it's open to consumer and industry feedback. And as The Wall Street Journal notes, suggestions have already changed the provision from its original form. "At the time, movie-theater owners and supermarkets, among others, complained that the rule was burdensome. In its updated proposal…the agency left out movie theaters, along with airplanes, bowling alleys, amusement parks, hotels and other establishments where the sale of food is not a primary business."
