Tai Chi – Spiritual Exercises: Basics

Tai Chi along with Qi Gong is one of the Oriental spiritual exercises aimed to provide the experiential component in a spiritual training program. = Tai Chi has more complex body movements than Qi Gong and hence difficult to follow. = Here is my attempt to present this video for basic training for all Spiritual Care students. Masters claim that spiritual powers of healing come from continuous practice of these meditation techniques – Master Jing Chen Li has been gracious in demonstrating the movements in clear-cut fashion. = Thanks to the Bellevue Community Center for offering their wonderful facilities and great social service!!

Genetic Testing for Colorectal Cancer

Hello, my name is Anna McGill and I am the genetic counselor here at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. As a genetic counselor, it is my job to help women and men with a personal or family history of cancer. In certain cases, cancer can be attributed to a change, or mutation, in a gene. These suspicious cancers often occur at young ages, with multiple family members affected, over multiple generations and may come clustered with specific types of cancer being more common in occurrence. There are two types of hereditary colon cancer. The first types of colon cancer syndromes are called polyposis syndromes. These syndromes cause a person to develop hundreds to thousands of polyps in their colon. When a person is affected with a polyposis syndrome; their chance to develop colon cancer approaches 100% in their lifetime. Many people with a polyposis syndrome do not have a family history. The second type of hereditary colon cancer is called nonpolyposis colon cancer. In hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer, there are fewer polyps found in the colon than in those with polyposis syndromes; however, these polyps develop into cancer faster than normal polyps and cancer may result at earlier ages. Colon cancer risk in those affected with hereditary nonpolyposis cancer ranges from 60%-80%. There are also other cancers associated with this syndrome including endometrial and ovarian cancer. She believes more people would turn their attention to colonoscopy if they understood its value. "People get mammograms, PSAs, those are the more well known things you know for breast cancer, prostate cancer – but the truth is those detect early cancers. The good news about colonoscopies is that it can actually prevent cancers because technically polyps are the things that grow up to become cancers." In a colonoscopy your doctor will insert a thin tube with a small camera in through the rectum. The device allows them to examine the colon's inner lining; it can collect tissue and remove polyps. "So if you have a colonoscopy, you take out the polyps, technically you should not develop colon cancer," says Dr. Gaw, a colorectal surgeon on the Lee Memorial Health System medical staff. If the colonoscopy finds an early cancer has already developed, it's still very treatable. Stage one cancer has close to a 90% cure rate. The difficult part when it comes to colorectal canner is there are few outward symptoms, and by the time someone feels sick, it might be too late. The bottom line: colonoscopies save lives. "I don't think I've every had anybody tell me I wish I never had a …
