Expert: Lisa Moskovitz Video transcript: Hi, my name is Lisa Moskovitz and I'm a registered dietitian and certified in the state of New York, with a private practice on the upper east side. I specialize in weight management, exercise and sports nutrition. And I'll be talking to you about diets. High protein diets. Are they safe and effective? The more protein we eat, generally the less carbohydrates we eat, and as an effect we run the risk of low energy. Carbohydrates are needed for energy, so by eating too much protein we may not feel the energy we really need to perform our day to day activities. Too much protein on the other hand can be a little harmful: it could be damaging to our kidneys and lead to dehydration. The best approach is to eat protein and carbohydrates both in maturation. Protein should be about 30% of your total calories and carbohydrates 40-50 for effective weight loss and long term weight management.
