YOU ARE HERE: THE MAP SIDESHOW (Part 3 includes modern dance, ballet, Javanese, and breakdance) Written and Performed by H. Peter Steeves Performed live as part of The Chicago Cultural Center's SITE UNSEEN Art Exhibition 12 November 2008 "You Are Here" is philosopher-artist H. Peter Steeves' meditation on the relationship between mapping and occupation—an exhibit mimicking the tone and the context of an antiquated, traveling science sideshow and cartographic carnival of curiosities. The performance part of the "You Are Show" exhibit took place in the Claudia Cassidy Theater (and was captured on video and presented here). "You are Here: The Map Sideshow" was a combination of dance, theatre, and lecture that encouraged thinking about the nature of maps and boundaries. Steeves was joined on stage by a cast of dancers and performers as a scholarly address on the philosophy and the ideology of maps devolved into a performative narrative that explored both celebrations and reservations having to do with the way in which mapping of all sorts is a precursor to occupation (of the body and the body-politic). Over the course of the evening, the show featured dancing from such diverse locations as Indonesia, India, Argentina, Turkey, France, and Spain. The performance was divided into linked 25-minute segments that could be viewed individually or as a continuous whole. The show in its entirety is presented here in three parts.
